The Journey Continues...and so does your reading!

Hi Guys:

I am sorry I am missing you today (Tuesday); I am quite sick and at home working on getting better. But, luckily, this gives you guys some time to read and search for information about Percy's Heroic journey.

In your reading for Thursday (up to page 188) you'll read about 2 of the tests or challenges that Percy has to overcome as he begins his travels.

For today, go to the moodle site, open up "The Lightning Thief, Readings 1-4" and complete the questions listed in READING 4 (chapters 10 and 11). Please read all directions carefully.

Save your answers and thoughts in a WORD DOCUMENT in your lightning thief folder.

Sooooo....now that you have all of your information written in your folder, really quickly post a comment to the following prompt:

1. What are the two obstacles Percy encounters as he begins his quest?
2. How does he overcome them both?
3. Which of the magical items (the sword, cap, Mist, shoes) do you think are going to be the most helpful moving forward in the quest?

  1. When Percy is on the bus, the furies are there and then it blows up because they are fighting. Another thing they run into is Medusa. She tries to kill them all. He escapes the furies by using Annabeth’s invisible cap on the bus, and when he runs into Medusa, he cuts her head of with his sword. I think that the cap is going to be the most helpful along the way. It will hide him from everything.

  2. The two obstacles Percy faces are The Furies and Medusa. He overcomes The Furies by having the bus blow up and they were still in there and they blew up and turned to dust. Percy overcomes Medusa by cutting her head off. I think the most magical items are the sword and the cap.

  3. percy encounters medusa and the furies. he over comes them both by killing all 3 furies and cutting off medusa's head. i think percy's sword because it can kill any mythical creature. i also think annabeth's cap because it makes her invisible.

  4. The bus that Percy, Annabeth and Grover are on was attacked by the Furies. They managed to get away and kill two of the Furies but Mrs. Dodds was still alive. The bus burst into flames after the fight. When the three of them get off the bus, they smell food and since they were starving they went inside a snack bar. Medusa was inside and tried to turn them to stone but Percy cut off her head. I think the sword is going to be the most useful magical item because it can help them fight off monsters and protect themselves.

  5. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover are first confronted with the Furies on the Public Bus. Annabeth tells Percy to save himself and that her and Grover can handle the Furies. Percy agrees and wears Annabeth’s Yankee’s cap, which turns you invisible.
As the furies head towards the back of the bus where Percy was previously sitting he slips past them towards the front of the bus. Percy sees that the Furies are close to killing Annabeth and Grover he impulsively grabs the steering wheel from the bus driver and jerks the bus harshly. This throws the Furies across the bus giving Annabeth and Grover a quick chance to recover. Percy then slams on the emergency break; this throws of the Furies but soon they recover and head into Percy’s direction, sense he has now removed the ball cap in attempt to distract the Furies. As they come closer Percy pulls out his pen/ sword and strikes a furry while Annabeth is holding back Mrs. Dodd’s. Lightning strikes the bus and Annabeth, Percy and Grover run but hear a screech from Mrs. Dodd’s indicating she’s not yet dead.
Annabeth, Grover, and Percy run into the woods to hide, but are overcome by hunger. They start walking and soon come across “Aunty Em’s Resturant.” After they have eaten Annabeth makes the connection to Aunty Em and Medusa, which Grover has suspected all along. Annabeth realizes who “Aunty Em” is when Grover makes the connection to the statue in “Aunty Em’s” yard and his Uncle Ferdinand.
Medusa is really only interested in killing Annabeth because Annabeth’s mother turned her from a beautiful woman into a hideous creature. By killing Annabeth she will get her revenge. She wants to keep Percy because she has no grudge against him and it would be, “Such a pity to destroy such a handsome young face.”
Annabeth tells Percy he’ll have to kill Medusa because Medusa doesn’t really care about him and he has to be the one to do it. He has killed “Aunty Em” also known as Medusa. He did this by watching her through a glass ball (staring directly at her turns you into stone) and waiting for “Aunty Em” to come closer so he can attempt to kill her with his pen/sword “Riptide.” As she gets closer she tries to trick Percy by telling him, “Not to ever harm an old women.” (For a second he believes her because he’s under her “spell”) Percy snaps out of it in time, and slashed up at her with his sword and cutting her head off.
Percy then sends the head to Olympus as a way to show off to his father. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover take some food and money from “Aunty Em’s” and take off to continue their journey.
I think that Percy and his friends will come across many more monsters before they reach the underworld.

  6. The furies on the bus and Grover and Annabeth have to fight them while Percy has to wear the Yankees cap. They encounter Aunty Em and she's actually Medusa so Percy has to kill her by cutting her head off with a sword. The shoes will have the most affect for them.

  7. Percy faces Medusa and the furies. he cuts off Medusa's head with riptide. he kills all 3 furies also with riptide. I think Percy's sword riptide because it can kill monsters. Annabeth's cap because it turns her invisible.

  8. The two obstacles he encounter in the beginning of his quest are The Furies and Medusa.
The Furies were dressed as three old ladies and they said they were going to the bathroom when they started to attacking Annabeth and Grover with their purses. They were screaming, “Where is it?” “Where!”. Annabeth and Grover were fighting back but they could not get away. Percy had the invisibility cap on and was swerving the bus. Percy screamed, “Hey!” and the ladies turned around. Percy took out his Riptide and the woman started to walk toward him. The other kids were screaming, “Go!” “Run!”. Percy hit the two woman on the right and the left. Then the Annabeth put the one in the middle in a wrestler hold, and brought her to the ground. Grover tied her up with her own whip. The bus driver stopped the bus and everyone got off. They all got off and ran into the woods, and the bus exploded.
    Percy chopped off Medusa's head!
The cap because I think it would be very hard for the opposite person they are fighting to not be able to see Percy.

  9. Percy meets Medusa and the three furies.Percy cuts of Medusa's head with the sword "riptide." He killes the three furies with riptide "sword."i think Percy's sword. Annabeth's yankees hat turns anyone invisable.

  10. The two main obstacles in Percy's path are The Furies and Medusa. He was able to defeat The Furies by using the invisible cap to swerve the bus around and then slash two of The Furies with Riptide. They then ran away from the third. Then Percy was able to chop Medusa's head off and then escape. Personally I think that riptide is going to be the most useful item. It's inevitable that you will face monsters and you need a celestial weapon to kill them.

  11. Percy runds into the three furies on the bus, them medusa at the garden gnome place. He "kills" the furies with riptide, and he cuts off medusa's head with riptide, and then he mails her head to Mount Olympus. Probably the sword, and the cap.

  12. Two obstacle Percy as encountered so far are the Minotaur and The furies. He encounters the minotaur when he is on his way to Half-Blood Hill and the minotaur throws the car into a ditch and Percy kills it and takes his horn. Then he encounters the furies when he is on a bus and the furies step on and he kills them with Riptide and they get off the buss safely.
The items I think are going to help them the most are the riptide and the invisible cap because the invisible cap can help them sneak around enemies they don’t want to encounter and then just take it off after they are out of that situation. Then the riptide can help them if they need to take out an enemy if they are attacked then they will be able to move on.

Well I am kind of behind on page 120 but I know a lot that’s ahead already.
Percy is in his school for the year Yancy academy and they take a trip to the museum. Then he encounters Mrs. Dodds the evil math teacher and a fury and he takes her out with the riptide (at this point he doesn’t know what it is yet.) Then on the bus home he sees three old ladies cutting yarn witch is a sign he will die. When they get back every one thinks he is a total moron because he is talking about Mrs. Dodds witch apparently is not real. Then he overhears Mr. Brunner (Latin teacher A.K.A. Chiron). After that he gets worse grades and is not invited back to yancy and when he gets home he gets to see his mom. Then they go to a cottage at the beach and talk about Percy’s dad and they get in the car with Grover and get attacked by a minotaur then Percy go’s to half blood hill and gets into cabin eleven and has a capture the flag game. Then Zeus’s lightning bold gets stolen. That’s all I read so far but what I know is to come is that they get attacked by the furies on the buss then it gets struck by lightning and they kill them and medusa after encountering her. What I think is to happen next is that they are going to find the lightning bolt after a few more encounters and bring it back to Zeus.
